Charles And Ray Eames “Power Of Ten” Tribute Screening Tonight!

6 Oct

We’re more than excited about tonight’s screening, which is sure to draw a crowd of tastemakers in droves. The film in question? Powers Of Ten, a short co-presented by Cabinet and the Science & the Arts program at CUNY. It’s a tribute to the classic of the same name by famed mid-century furniture designers Charles and Ray Eames, who just happened to influence just about everyone, from graphics masters to fashion designers. A 9-minute odyssey of scale, from the “infinitesimal to the cosmic,” the film is one of the most widely seen shorts of all time—look for pop-culture references in everything from The Simpsons to Coldplay, from Hummer commercials to Men in Black. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Beatriz Colomina (founding director of the Program in Media and Modernity at Princeton University), D. Graham Burnett (historian of science, Princeton University), and Eames Demetrios, grandson of the filmmakers. So, wear your smartest pair of 7s and some geek glasses…if you’re in the market for a style-savvy Professor.

Tonight, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Elebash Recital Hall, CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue (at 34th Street), New York
