Trend Alert: Military Chic

24 Apr

Why We Love It: Our California roots mean that we love a laid back look when we see one. Right now, we’re digging the Army Green, military trend as the perfect balance to tradition blue denim. Even paired with a pattern or a tee, this hue is a nice substitute for denim when you want to keep things casual.

Where We’ve Seen It: The blogger scene has been chock full of camouflage, military-inspired jackets and Army Green all season long. A few of our faves, like Chiarra Ferrigni of The Blonde Salad to Ahn Sundstrom of 9 To 5 Chic have both rocked 7 For All Mankind in their pursuit of military chic.

How We’re Doing It: Since the color and theme is a little rugged, we’d to pair these Slim Illusions in Army Green with softer elements. The Double Zipper Blouse in Blanc de Blanc is drapey enough to off-set the toughness of the pants while the Denim Jacket with Pearls in Light Destroyed adds a feminine touch. Top off the look with a polished accessory like the Skinny Belt in Nude. Now forward march! Your look is street-chic ready.

Trend Alert: Chinos

18 Apr

Why We Love It: There’s something about a pair of cotton chinos that just screams “summer”! We love the way these pants can be either dressed up or keep things casual. Their not-quite-trousers aesthetic will keep you feeling fine through the fall.

Where We’ve Seen It: Everywhere from the beach to the office, these pants can multi-task like few other pieces can. Rolled up with a white tee and a pair of fresh kicks is a perfect look for a Saturday in the park. But with a button-down shirt and a pair of desert boots, you’re meeting-ready.

How We’re Doing It: One of our favorite style bloggers, Justin Livingston from Scout Sixteen recently rocked our Chino in Mellow Yellow and we loved the laid-back look he achieved. Paired with a loosely fitted Henley and a woven fedora, this outfit is oh-so-spring ready. We also love how he cuffed them to expose a fun, multi-colored sock. Bonus points!

So don’t skip Spring’s quintessential twills. Make an entrance in any one of these pants (or shorts!) this season. Check out our Chino Shop here.

Coachella Packing List

10 Apr

It’s that time again! The who’s who in music, art and fashion are all packing up and shipping out to Cali for Coachella and we couldn’t be more excited.  Festival fashion is super laid back, and represents that Cali-cool vibe that 7 For All Mankind has always been all about. So naturally, putting together a hit list of the most coveted items for this year’s extravaganza was a given. Read on for our ultimate packing list!

1. Distressed shorts. There is simply no better way to get down and dirty at Coachella than in a pair of Vintage 7 shorts. Let’s face it –it’s going to be HOT! So shed the pants and bare those legs, ladies!

2. SPF. Speaking of the weather…don’t forget to use protection—UV protection that is! We love 3LAB’s Perfect Sunscreen SPF 55 ($40 here).

3. Endless mobile power. Enter: Mophie, our fave little travel essential that lets you keep your phone charged for more than twice its battery life. It’s like an outlet in your purse! And c’mon, we both know that you’ll need all the the juice you can get to keep those concert Instagrams coming. Get one here.

4. A henley tank. Remember that Indio is located in the middle of the desert. The best rule to go by this weekend: the lighter your clothes, the more fun you will have. Throw on our Color Blocked Denim Henley in Indigo to keep cool.

5. Dry shampoo. Don’t be that high maintenance girl this weekend. Especially if you’re camping, skip the hair wash and opt for a good spritz of dry shampoo. We’re using Sachajuan’s Travel Size Dry Shampoo ($13 here).

This year’s lineup is so rad (especially stoked for Grimes and TNGHT!) that we couldn’t help but compile the most rockin’ playlist this side of Indio. Get to jamming below and take this hand-curated Spotify playlist on the go!

DIY Denim: How Do You Distress?

5 Apr

What story do your jeans tell? Whether they’ve been naturally worn in or distressed using a simple set of kitchen tools, it’s the details in vintage denim that makes it special. Inspired by the Vintage 7 Collection, here is the DIY approach to distressing denim. Of course, if an at home project isn’t for you, you can always pick up a pair from the Vintage 7 Collection and claim the work as your own!

Here’s how to create your own distressed masterpiece.

Safety Glasses

Nail File

Sand Paper

Pumice Stone

X-acto Knife

Binder Clips

Brick or Paperweight

Step 1: Distressing

Begin by using the dremel on the top of the front pockets to get small holes and nicks. This would also work by using a knife to open up the fabric, followed by some light abrasion with sandpaper. Repeat this technique on the top of the back pockets and the back, bottom hem. These spots are where jeans would naturally wear over time.

TIP: For these small spots, you can also use a pumice stone or nail file to create authentic looking distress marks.

Note: You may also need to hold the denim in place with a brick or paperweight while using a dremel, which can sometimes cause the fabric to get tangles if not anchored down securely.

Step 2: Kneehole

To get a knee hole that looks like it’s been gradually worn through, first measure exactly where the hole will be by running a tape measure down the inseam starting from the rise to 11 ½ inches down (this will be the center of the hole). Lightly mark the measure point with chalk. Anchor the pant legs down with bricks or something heavy, so the material is taught and won’t get caught in the dremel. Slowly eat away at the top layer of the denim (also called the “warp”) until the white yarns underneath (called the “weft”) start showing through. Try tea staining the weft threads so that they have that worn in vintage feel.

TIP: Washing and drying the jeans after this process will clean away the denim fuzz that sits on top and the hole will look cleaner and worm in.

Step 3: Whiskering

The whiskering on the upper thigh area comes from years of standing and sitting, but to create them, simply make 3 little accordion-style pleats near the upper thigh, keep them in place by clipping them with binder clips. Then, lightly graze the top of each fold with a piece of chalk to mark where you will be distressing. Release the clips and start running sand paper over where the chalk marks are. Creases with will become white depending on how much you sand them.

TIP: Fold your sandpaper into a small square so it’s easier to control and more effectively distresses the denim.

“The key to distressing is to make everything look as authentic as possible and emulate the natural wear you would find with a pair of vintage jeans.”

-Jennifer Garcia, Women’s Denim Designer

Some of our favorite distressed denim inspiration comes from the Vintage 7 Collection. Pieces like the Josephina in Light Blue Destroyed and the Slimmy for guys in Ocean Mist are two perfect examples. Browse and shop the whole collection here.

Trend alert: Bold Stripes!

2 Apr

Screen shot 2013-04-02 at 2.18.00 PM

Why we love it: A long standing wardrobe staple, stripes returned with a bang this season.

Where we’ve seen it: Bold pairings like black and white, Railroad Stripes and mismatched hues peppered runways from Altuzarra to Prada to Thakoon.

How we’re doing it: Our Cropped Slim Cigarette in Black and White Gloss from our Spring Collection is stealing the show this season. From the glossy pages of NYLON, to the click-frenzied world of fashion blogs (as seen below on Blaire from Atlantic-Pacific and Helena from Brooklyn Blonde) these jeans are anything from ordinary.
