Late-Summer Musts: What To See, Hear and Do.

30 Jul

Don’t freak out. Summer isn’t over and there’s still so much yet to do around our favorite cities, much of which is free, all of which is fun, engaging and enriching.

Whether it’s jazz in the park or an enormous surf expo, delving into the local culture of these three major cities is the perfect way to spend the rest of the season – dressed of course, in go- anywhere, do-anything, day-to-night denim.

Los Angeles

See: Made in L.A. until September 7th at The Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd.

– This free, must see art exhibit showcases some of the city’s biggest under-the-radar talent.

Hear: Beyonce and Jay Z August 2nd at Rose Bowl Stadium, 1001 Rose Bowl Drive, Pasadena.

– The dynamic duo’s epic show is a hard one to get into, but no doubt a memorable musical experience and well worth the work it takes to score a ticket.

Do: US Open of Surfing until August 3rd. Main Street, Huntington Beach.

– This packed outdoor event is the epitome of modern day Southern California surf culture and a perfect way to enjoy sunny weather while watching world-class surfers do their thing.

New York

See: SummerScreen until August 11th at McCarren Park Nassau Avenue between Leonard and N. 12th Streets, Brooklyn.

– It’s a hipster gathering with 80s and 90s nostalgic movies. Enjoy Zoolander and Heathers screenings while dining al fresco on the lawn.

Hear: St. Vincent August 17th at The Bowery Ballroom 6 Delancey Street.

– The hot indie ticket of the summer, St. Vincent is sure to put on an amazing show in this intimate venue.

Do: The Maids at New York City Center 131 West 55th St.

– Cate Blanchett takes the stage in this dramatic and intense production of Jean Genet’s play.

See: Millennium Park Summer Film Series until August 26th at 201 East Randolph Street.

– Classics like American Graffiti and The Wizard of Oz are shown on a large screen in the city’s iconic park.

Hear: Chicago Jazz Festival August 28th-31st at 201 East Randolph Street.

– There’s nothing like some cool jazz on a warm summer night, especially when music legends and talented newcomers line up to entertain the masses.

Do: Lollapalooza August 1st– August 3rd at Grant Park 337 East Randolph Street.

– One of the first and most dynamic music festivals, this year Lollapalozza’s line up includes Eminem, Outkast, Kings of Leon and Lorde.

Style Insiders Share Their Summer Staycation Spots

23 Jul

Summer always seems to fly by too quickly, so packing in a sufficient amount of relaxing long weekends is key for creating a cool, balanced and stylish season.

Long weekends (or even just a long afternoon) spent on “staycation” near the city where you live or maybe even not that far from your house, are the perfect thing to pepper throughout the summer and feel like you were properly pampered and recharged.

Throw some key denim pieces, like cut off shorts, white jeans and a denim jacket for layering, into a weekend bag and head out to an old haunt or to discover somewhere new.

We tapped some of our favorite fashion and media influencers to see what their personal favorite staycation spots are for escaping this summer:

Sara Riff, director of VIP for Jimmy Choo and co-founder of

“I love a day on Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach CA, where I grew up. Its always the perfect way to relax and recharge.”.

Natalie Alcala, Racked LA editor

The Colony Palms Hotel in Palm Springs is the ultimate staycation. I love that a painless two-hour drive transports me from sunny Los Angeles to an even sunnier, dreamier world where my agenda only includes two tasks: drink lemonade (there’s is delicious!) and swim as often as possible. Colony’s glorious, 1,800-square-foot Palme d’Or Residence is a must-book if you’re traveling with a group of friends.”

Nicole Mann Novick, Style Writer and Founder of Garland Collection Fine Jewelry, Vintage Jewelry & Maison.

North Folk

My perfect staycation would be spending a beautiful summer day with my husband wine tasting and treasure hunting our way through the vineyards and antique shops along the North Fork of Long Island. Just a short jaunt from the tony Hamptons, the equally scenic North Fork moves at a scrumptiously slower pace. I would of course pick up fresh local goodies at one of the many farm stands along the way. We’d end the day watching the sun set over the Sound with a romantic seaside picnic and one of our new bottles of wine to celebrate all of our fabulous finds.

Bryan Smith, Director of Public Relations for the Wall Group.LeZinque

“My idea of an amazing LA summer stay-cation involves a glass of rose with friends on sunny Sunday afternoons. Currently my local go-to spot for this is Le Zinque on the corner of Melrose and San Vicente. It’s cute, easy and has a fantastic outdoor seating area.”

Erin Weinger, Style Editor,

“My favorite part of living in California (or one of my many favorite parts of living in California) is the ability to hop in the car on a whim and be somewhere completely different in a matter of hours, which is why I frequently find myself at the Bacara Resort in Santa Barbara. I don’t let the fact that I’m a working girl who can’t swing 5-star hotel rooms just because deter me from going, as I find enjoying lunch and a cocktail by their pool to be a completely transformative experience that oozes luxury without spending a ton of money (also, they have free valet!). Hint: When you’re done, Santa Barbara has some randomly killer vintage and thrift stores that are worth checking out.”

Secret Summer Spots: Insanely Good Ice Cream Shops.

17 Jul

Not to brag, but one of the beautiful things about being in Southern California is that it’s pretty much ice cream weather all the time.

But as the summer really sizzles, a scoop or three of artisnal ice cream from a few amazing local shops is as essential to the season as denim cut offs and a dance-able play list.

Since we’re experts in all three of the aforementioned areas, allow us to share a well-curated list of must-visit ice cream spots around town.

Cocktail Hour: The SLS Hotel does a Sexy Summer Cocktail.

10 Jul

The Bazaar_Jasmine Margarita

While there may not be actual scientific proof that cocktails taste better during the summer, we’re pretty sure most people would agree when the theory is proposed.

Happy hour, after a long day stuck in the office, is especially rewarding and we find the Jasmine Margarita at The Bazaar at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills to be the perfect start to a sexy, after-work-unwind session.

The Jasmine Margarita is bright, refreshing and beautiful to look at. We recommend drinking it rather than just gazing at it, but like many of the concoctions the SLS Hotel whips up, this one is pretty and tasty.SLS Hotel

Make your next happy hour at The SLS or try whipping up the Jasmine Margarita yourself for an at-home cocktail affair with friends.

The Getaway Bag: Your Most Versatile Day to Night Vacation Wardrobe.

1 Jul

Ever wish you just had a weekender bag packed with the most stylish getaway gear, in your car and ready to go?

It’s not that complicated when you’ve got the right pieces to take you from day to night, Friday to Monday, with ease.

We recommend starting with denim. For the girls: pack your favorite 7 For All Mankind denim cut offs – the foundation of any summer wardrobe and the perfect piece to dress up or down with a pair of jeweled flat sandals for night or some easy flip flops for day.

Pink Sandal

Throw in a drapey tank top that can be tied up as a mid-riff baring essential or tucked in and layered with a chic moto jacket in the evening.

For the guys: You shouldn’t be leaving the house without a denim jacket anyway, so count that in. A versatile white t-shirt is also a must and pairs well with 7 For all Mankind Indigo striped shorts for a crisp look that works anytime and most anywhere.

Ladies are always allowed a bit more room when it comes to packing; so don’t neglect your key beauty items.

A pop of pink gloss will brighten up a daytime look and a pair of dramatic sunglasses will stylishly punctuate your getaway gear.

ILIA-Back To LifeSunniesLeopard Clutch

Carry a back up bag (preferably a chic leopard clutch) for nights out or day trips where all you need is your phone, a camera and a little cash to get you to your next destination.
