All In- Jump Into the Season’s Chicest Trend!

27 May

Tracing back to its utilitarian roots, the jumpsuit is arguably one of the most functional and practical clothing ideas to ever surface. In recent years, we’ve seen it as much more of a style setting foundation piece, on the likes of Gwen Stefani, Rihanna and Gwyneth Paltrow, and now the jumpsuit is a full force fashion essential.

This summer, we’re doing our own version, in a soft yet sophisticated dark blue chambray. The cut is part chic tuxedo; part playful and sexy and works with sky-high heels or easy, warm weather flats.

It’s the perfect piece for traveling and throwing on day or night, due to its versatile nature and no brainer all-in-one quality.gwyn

Play up the deep V cut of the neckline with long layered necklaces for a loose and casual look or go for the drama and don pulled back hair, statement earrings and a bold red lip.

No matter how you wear it, a jumpsuit always makes a cool style statement, especially for summer.

Kicking Off Summer Style This Memorial Day

20 May

Memorial Day weekend means the unofficial start of summer, ushering in a lighter outlook, longer days and shorter workweeks. How could we possibly not celebrate such an amazing occasion?

@tuulavintage takes in a summer sunrise

And, of course we feel that anything worth celebrating is worth doing so in style. Whether you have a friend’s BBQ, a romantic beach picnic or just a lazy weekend around the house on the agenda, denim in all forms is the official uniform of this unofficial start of the season.

You can’t beat a pair of denim cut-offs for a hot weekend where you want to look sexy, but also be comfortable and ready for anything. Slip on a pair with an over-sized, white button down shirt, a pair of statement slides and a chic sun hat and you’ll look pulled together, but still totally relaxed.

Aimee Song Shorts

@songofstyle proves cut-off’s can be chic

Same goes for a knee length denim skirt. Tuck a fitted tank top into the waistband and throw on a pair of giant tortoise sunglasses for a 70s inspired vibe that always feels summery.

Classy and Casual Denim Perfection

Guys, anything goes when you have a great pair of shorts and a denim jacket to layer over your t-shirt for when the BBQ moves into the evening. Opt for a pair of all-white sneakers (what better time to break those out) or some classic deck shoes sans socks.

Denim Layers

Next to style, we’re most concerned with the cocktails (or mocktails) and food.

A Sparkling Gin and Juice just screams Memorial Day weekend as do most things ice, ice cold and served with a red and white striped straw. And a hearty but healthy Bruschetta, topped with juicy and colorful tomatoes, is the perfect snack to balance out all the booziness.

However you choose to ring in summer this weekend, remember that the season ahead really is the best for new adventures, spontaneous trips and chasing dreams. We’re happy to be able to equip you with the best pieces to take you there in style.

Summer lovin’ from @lateafternoon

Mother’s Day Done Right

8 May
Listen, breakfast in bed is fine and a brunch and flowers won’t ever be turned down, but what mom really wants is some peace, quiet, and perhaps a new pair of her favorite denim.
victorian floral
Think outside the box this year and flatter mom with a pair of chic floral jeans that will have her feeling like a kid again. Well, not a kid, but a really, really stylish and put together young lady.
To compliment the blue hue of mom’s new denim, gift her a bottle of on-trend turquoise nail lacquer that she can swipe on to get into a summer-y mood. This color from Illamasqua is highly pigmented and extra shiny – for the mom who is fearless and loves to flirt with the latest in fashion and beauty.
Illamasquanail varnish - noble
Also, there’s hardly a mom, or woman for that matter, who doesn’t love a really great scented candle. This Jo Malone Sweet Almond and Macaroon scented candle will perk up any room for summer with the light scent of coconut and vanilla.
And no matter if mom is a fanny pack or tote bag kind of girl, she will most likely appreciate a go everywhere, all occasion leather pouch like this cheeky version that looks like an old Air Mail letter.
The destination on the pouch reads, “Far Far Away,” which is exactly where mom may want to be on Sunday…at least in her mind.
Get mom something she may not spoil herself with. Think denim, decadently scented candles and a destination, “Far Far Away…”
Happy Mother’s Day!

Things You Should Know for Coachella Weekend 2

17 Apr

The first weekend of Coachella has come to a close, but the party is far from over. If anything, the momentum is even stronger. Plus, now we now know a few key things in order to be even more prepared for the second installment of our favorite music fest.

Last week brought more than just an all out fun music festival. We also crowned the winner of our Dreaming in Blue video contest! Congratulations to Angelica of Angelica Joy Jewelry who inspired us with her video and won a trip for two to Coachella and $5000 to make her dreams come true.

Angelica will be enjoying the music, style and heat of the desert festival and along with the rest of us, may benefit from knowing the following tips.

From the best acts to effectively beating the crowd, here are the most important things to know for Coachella, weekend #2.

Girl Power: Ellie Goulding and Haim Rock Harder than the Rest.

This year, it was the girls – specifically British pop princess, Ellie Goulding and the L.A. sister band, Haim – that had festival-goers buzzing loudest. Goulding got the crowd going with her upbeat hits that she added a decidedly rock twist to, wearing an all-black leather outfit, even incorporating metal band hair flip moves into the mix.

Haim’s songs, as well as talk of their talent, has been on the tip of everyone’s lips and even in the heat of the late afternoon desert sun –

The group didn’t disappoint.

Don’t Miss the Giant Moon Man.

As if most of the surroundings at Coachella don’t seem surreal enough, festival-goers (and their Instagram accounts) were in awe of the giant space explorer that glided through the crowd on wheels.

Great Gourmet Eats in the Middle of the Desert.

Coachella’s come a long way from basic beer and French fries. Gourmet hipster food has officially found its way to the desert, creating almost as much of an attraction as the music. Here are the epicurean highlights:

Night + Market

Stumptown Coffee

Salt + Straw

Craft Beer Garden

Plan Accordingly.

You never really know what fun or frustration a weekend at Coachella will bring and that’s all part of the adventure, right?

But there are a couple of things, besides staying hydrated, that will help keep everything on an even keel.

1.    Get there early or arrive after nightfall – We get it. The ideal situation is to wake up late, lounge around the pool and/or hit a mid day party, then head into the festival around the late afternoon. Go ahead and do that, but be forewarned that everyone else and their crop top- wearing buddies are doing the same thing, thus making the bottleneck traffic jam at the gates a total, and not to mention, scorching nightmare. Either arrive early at the beginning of the day, or wait until the sun goes down to avoid a massive crowd and potential sunburn.

2.    Use a car tracking app – Why ruin a fun day of music and hanging with friends with an hour of walking through a dusty parking lot to find your car? Download a trusty app that leads you back to your car with no fuss. An app like Find My Car is a good one. Get it. Use it. You’re welcome.

The 7 Most Surprising Things About Coachella

10 Apr

When people in L.A mention “Music Festival Season” we suspect that they’re really referring to The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival aka “Coachella”.

Not only is it one of the biggest and most well attended music festivals in the world (hello, with past acts like Radiohead, Coldplay, Kanye West and a hologram Tupac in the mix, how could it not be?) it’s staged in the hot desert sun, which is the most perfect setting for skin baring and denim centric ensembles that people love to flaunt all weekend long.

But while you might be familiar with the bands and the fashion, trust us – you don’t have this massive festival totally figured out.

Here are the 7 most surprising things to know about Coachella and perfect trivia to drop on your friends while waiting in line for the port-a-potty:

1. It’s been sold out since 2004 – The first year Coachella sold out was 2004 and Radiohead was the headlining act. Today, tickets sell out within hours of going on sale.

2. Coachella started in 1999 – Beck and Rage Against the Machine were the headliners and the band, A Perfect Circle, was the first band ever to perform at the festival.

3. No Show in the year 2000 – Due to alleged financial woes, Coachella went on hiatus in the year 2000. It was back the next year with some modifications such as: holding it as a single day event in April in order to avoid soaring desert temps.

4. Go Green: In 2007, Coachella worked with Global Inheritance to promote a 10 for 1 recycling program, rewarding anyone who collected 10 empty water bottles, with 1 free full bottle.

5. Denim Daze – While the blazing desert sun is a scorcher during the day, the polo fields get really chilly as soon as night falls. Bringing your trusty 7 For All Mankind jean jacket and favorite worn in cut offs are a no fail festival ensemble that will keep you comfortable and chic.

6. Big Bucks – Something’s clearly working with Coachella founder Paul Tollett’s grand plan, because, Coachella is the most profitable music festival in the US today.

7. Luxe Amenities: In 2012 the festival camp grounds began featuring recycling, showers, a general store, phone charging stations and an Internet cafe with free WiFi.

Liz Cherkasova Discovers Eclectic Vintage Treasures in the Desert

4 Apr

Liz Cherkasova, the blogger behind Late Afternoon, understands all of the amazing things the California desert has to offer. Sure, she goes to soak up the dry, soul warming heat and lay poolside in a flowy embroidered caftan, but this style setter also seeks out the gorgeous natural terrain, best dive bars and coolest vintage boutiques unique to Palm Springs and Joshua Tree.

She set out on her dream trip packing chic and flirty pieces that work to enhance the romance of the open road. Her French Blue flare jeans, sun bleached Slim Illusion skinnies and Malhia Kent: ankle skinnies in rose gold, all paired perfectly with the flowy and eclectic items she brought along to layer for her day to night look.

“French Blues and a lace robe lend a sense of romance and intrigue on the road.” Liz says about her boho-chic ensemble. She also brought along her favorite, trusty pair of black ankle boots that served her up-for-anything sense of adventure as well as her laid back style.

“You never know when you’ll come across a rock to climb.” She adds. “That’s why I always opt for my go-to boots and denim.”

When she wasn’t scaling the stunning red rocks of the deserts, Liz was hunting for treasure – vintage clothing treasure that is – at one of her favorite stores for scoring the sartorial gems she loves to incorporate into her signature look.

“The Fine Art of Design is the best vintage boutique in all of California.” Says the pink-haired blogger. “It is owned and curated by a dear friend of mine who has an impeccable eye for vintage. When you’re there you can find anything from Chanel to a 1960’s gown worn to the Oscars.”

The vintage rocker vibe of her denim and vintage outfits were perfect for heading out to hear some amazing bands play at a local venue she frequents while visiting the area.

“Pappy’s is by far the best secret venue in the desert.” Says Liz “It hosts some of the coolest bands and in between weekend 1 and 2 of Coachella you can see some of the artists for the price of a couple of beers. Plus they have the best chili I’ve ever had.”

Whether it’s gearing up for a music festival or seeking out the best of Palm Spring’s local culture, Liz doesn’t take any of it for granted and always manages to sport the dreamiest outfit while experiencing all of it.

Into the Blue: Andrew Arthur Captures California’s Quintessential Coastal Style

24 Mar

If you’ve got a serious case of wanderlust, photographer Andrew Arthur’s images from his dream road trip up Highway 1 along the Pacific Coast might be just the thing to get you out of your seat and into a car to discover the peaceful, natural and romantic California coast in the way Andrew was able to capture it.

His images straddle introspective solitude and a ready-for-anything attitude that is so necessary for a great adventure. From a cliff’s edge to a quiet moment on the beach, Andrew discovered what is timeless and unique about the area stretching through idyllic Malibu.

He clearly soaked up the stunning nature surrounding him as well as made a point to stop at some famous landmarks along the way.

“Neptune’s Net is THE biker pit stop if you’re cruising up the coast on Highway 1.” Says Andrew about the famed restaurant and bar. “Good eats, great view, you can’t pass it up.”

He even escaped to “Italy” on his trip, when visiting the historic Getty Villa.

“One day I will visit Naples but until then this will do just fine.” Remarks Andrew about the impressive grounds of The Getty Villa.

From the beach to a must-see biker bar, Andrew’s images were heightened by a coastal-chic wardrobe that included a super versatile heather grey stripe sweatshirt which he could easily pair back with his Luxe Performance Slimmy jeans in the Angeleno Hills wash and for chillier days or nights, throw on his grey Trucker jacket or white denim jacket as a stylish and effective layer.

“This jacket is perfect for early morning grey weather.” Says Andrew about his trusty Trucker jacket. “It’s super thin and comfortable.”

But the best item Andrew packed was his Canon 5D Mark III camera, on which he was able to get such pristine images of where the ocean waves meet the sand and where the jagged cliffs meet the sky, with such amazing detail.

He also relied on good old Polaroid film to get some sentimental snap shots.

“Lately I’ve been really into shooting Polaroids with my Fujifilm Intax 210.” Says Andrew “I like the idea of having an instant “memory” right in front of you.”

Between stunning dawn to dusk photos and inspiring landscape images, we have no doubt Andrew was able to make a lot of memories as well as beautifully capture the California coast most people dream about.

Palm Springs Chic: Hillary Kerr Hits the Open Road in Style

17 Mar

It’s a no brainer that when embarking on a lengthy road trip, an easy and relaxed outfit is in order. But, when said road trip is to the super stylish city of Palm Springs and you’re a fashion writer with flare and a penchant for great accessories, the ensemble needs to be chic, versatile and comfortable.

When Hillary Kerr hit the open road on the ultimate dream escape to Palm Springs, she went wearing her adorable and essential sunglasses, 7 For All Mankind’s versatile and slimming Slim Illusion Jeans and an appetite for adventure.

“There’s something about Palm Springs that I’ve always adored.” Says Hillary. “It was the destination for my first “real” girls’ trip with my friend after high school and I always manage to find inspiration there.”

She still considers it an amazing girl’s get away and frequents The Parker Palm Springs and The Colony Palms hotels for the gorgeous and relaxing atmosphere.

While endlessly lounging around the pool is always the ultimate temptation while in Palm Springs, Hillary really took advantage of immersing herself in the beauty of the vast open desert and the freedom of the open road.

Screen Shot 2014-03-12 at 11.46.45 AM

“I always love seeing the Cabazon Dinosaurs: they just never fail to delight. I was a huge dinosaur fan when I was little, so every time I see them, I feel like a kid again.” She says of one of her favorite Palm  Springs attractions.

Wearing her trusty Slim Illusion Mid Rise Skinny in Powder Blue and eye catching Slim Illusion Ankle Skinny in Royal Blue, she was seamlessly able to go from the car to a few pit stops along the way and all the way through to sight seeing and cocktails at one of her favorite haunts.

The revolutionary fabric of the jeans retains it’s shape throughout the day and night and as witnessed on Hillary, always looks sleek, chic and ready for anything.

Along with a few pairs of Slim Illusion, Hillary packed other stylish road trip essentials like colorful cross body bags, oversized sunnies, vintage rock t’s and a sumptuous leather jacket. Part rock, part route 66 – her look couldn’t be better for a dream escape to the desert.

But besides the clothes, there are other important road trip essentials, like snacks, music and a great traveling companion.

“You want a great person sitting shotgun, as they’re in charge of controlling the music and directions,” says Hillary. “Having the perfect playlist—well, several, in my case—is also of paramount importance. I’ve been on a real soul and Motown kick lately, so “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” by The Temptations is the must-have song to start your road trip right. This is silly, but I also have a thing about Corn Nuts; I never eat them unless I’m on a road trip, so that’s an essential snack. And finally, a fountain soda, preferably Diet Pepsi, with crushed ice, is my favorite on-the-road beverage.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Dreaming of Design: Aimee Song’s Catalina Architectural Exploration

13 Mar

photo 2-3

Aimee Song might be known for her enviable and easy going style, but architecture and design are her other loves and areas of expertise.

The blogger studied interior design before starting her popular online destination and is crafty and creative at designing cool and functional spaces for her clients.

During her dream road trip to Catalina Island, she took in the sights around the small, Southern California sea town, including the Victorian-inspired architecture, Spanish influence, quaint restaurants and wild and rocky terrain of the area.

Between the vivid blue ocean and sky, plus the adorable and eclectic town of Catalina, its no surprise Aimee was super inspired creatively in her design work and style.

She brought out her crisp, Island-appropriate  Mid Rise Ankle Skinny With Faux Leather Trim in White and mixed it with summery espadrilles and oversized sunglasses for a comfortable yet chic look.

While Aimee’s look is thoroughly modern, her stay at the Hotel St. Lauren gave her a glimpse into the island’s storied past.

“The hotel was cute from the outside but the interior was quite dated.” She says. “It’s cool if you like an all pink decor that kind of looks like it would belong to your great grandmother.”

The dated design may not have been up this interiors expert’s alley, but she did gather a lot of great ideas even during her short stay.

“Staying on a small island means the rooms are smaller too, which results in smart planning when designing a space.” Says Aimee “I’m inspired to design a space to be really efficient when the size is limited, so that my clients are able to enjoy the space and always feel like they’re on vacation!”

Aimee nailed the dream vacation look as well as the design. She even has bigger plans to build someone’s dream house someday.

“I saw a lot of construction going on in Catalina Island,” she says. “It would be amazing if I could design a beautiful vacation home for someone!”

We have no doubt someone out there would find that amazing as well.
